I'd rather work on making X-Day a bigger event than Burning Man. Burning Man is becoming commercialized and corporatized, and fortunately we still have a while before X-Day reaches that point.

I think you're nuts on that score, Modemac. Burning Man makes X-Day Drills look like a Baptist square dance by comparison. As far as being commercialized and corporatized, you'd have to explain that one to me. I thought WE were the ones who were commercialized and corporatized, just not very good at it. I think Burning Man is a GREAT event and if you're interested in spectacular art, you should try to attend while it's still being held at Black Rock.

Before Reebok, Sony, and Ticketmaster buy it?

I'm not sure if I'd *want* to be at an event like Burning Man. Being surrounded by 25,000 "artists" -- of which about 85% are probably just coming to sit back and be entertained while 15% do all the work -- in the middle of the desert with no showers and no HOT TUB doesn't sound like my idea of a good time. Even if they *do* have Dr. Megavolt and we don't, yet. I'm of the opinion that we *can* make X-Day into the biggest Brushwood event of the year -- bigger than Starwood -- but our lack of commercialism may stymie us and keep us from bringing in the really big crowds. Christ, even before we left Brushwood on Sunday, the place was filling up with vendors, snake oil salesmen, New Age crap dealers, and other folks of that sort.

We attracted one pagan band to X-Day (Woven Dreams), and look how far they got. On the other hand, folks like Little Fyodor and Lust in Space joined our fold because they came looking for a good time (and maybe to make some money)...and they got it, in spades. If you're looking to make a *profit* at X-Day, you may as well forget it (except for the SubGenius Foundation itself)...BUT, there's no reason why we can't attract a decent crowd of maybe 300 or so and STILL have a good time.

We may not be as big as Burning Man, but the environment is more hospitable (pagans notwithstanding) and we STILL get to take a clean shower each morning there. Given a choice between Burning Man and X-Day, I'll take X-Day...especially if it's anything like this year, when everyone came together and MADE the Rupture happen!

Though I'm still committed to following Dr. Geddyn's commandment: BRING ONE PERSON NEXT YEAR WHO HAS NEVER BEEN TO X-DAY BEFORE. Let's set a goal of at least 300 people, and see if we can't still pull it off AND get our Slack, too! 1998 was legendary, but the behind the scenes folks (which I had not done nearly enough with, that year) busted their asses and wore themselves out to make sure everyone else had a good time. Next year, I want 300 people there all pitching in and giving Slack to everyone.

Hell yes, I want my cake and eat it too. I'm a SUBGENIUS! I WANT IT
ALL!!!

Burning Man has reached what we ad industry execs refer to as "Critical Mass." Within a year you'll see a BMW commercial (soundtrack by Moby), a feature length motion picture with follow on CD and video game, plus a host of Burning Man exposes on daytime talk-u-drama. New episodes of Survivor are already in the works...

Speak for yourself, Modemac. I didn't do too badly, selling Connie fish t-shirts, and I hardly hyped them at all. I didn't make TONS of money but I was able to have much economic freedom--and the credit line to then win the date with Sis D. For that matter, I understand that Joy D'Veeve sold candid Polaroids of herself and was happy with the outcome. So it CAN be done; you just have to provide something nobody else is doing. I hope that's something any SubGenius can do...!

Also, you can also engage in barter, and thus get a lot of cool shit
without exchanging cash.

We may not be as big as Burning Man, but the environment is more hospitable (pagans notwithstanding) and we STILL get to take a clean shower each morning there.

You hit a nerve there. It's nice to be guaranteed that hot shower. Hell, if the Xists don't have hot water, you can FORGET about me being Ruptured. Even if all they do is put my brain in a jar, I'll STILL want a hot shower in the morning.

Though I'm still committed to following Dr. Geddyn's commandment: BRING ONE PERSON NEXT YEAR WHO HAS NEVER BEEN TO X-DAY BEFORE.

I convinced one to come this year. Next year, I'm working on bringing the entire Seattle clench, or at least enough to rent an RV. (It was their idea in the first place.) And I know the one who came, St. Bevo Youngblood, will be bringing his S.O. with him.

Let's set a goal of at least 300 people, and see if we can't still pull it off AND get our Slack, too!

Goal? *blank look*

Subject: Re: Burning Man
From: "Rev. Ivan Stang" <stang@subgenius.com>

You can take showers at Burning Man. There are public showers after a fashion, people bring camp shower kits, and most RVs have showers. You just have to be sparing with the water -- UNLIKE PHILO!!! It's the same situation as in most campgrounds -- you bring what you need. Some people go hiking for days in the wilderness without taking a tiled bathroom with them. If you have money for an RV -- about $500 for the week if you split it with 2 or 3 others -- you might as well be in a motel room! If you don't have money, then you do just like when you camp anywhere else. Sponge baths etc.

Also, it isn't blistering hot, due to the high elevation -- in fact it's really cold at night. If it RAINS for LONG the mud becomes a problem. That doesn't happen most years. The wind storms happen almost daily but are very short (and exciting!). There are no bugs, snakes, tarantulas, or even mosquitos, because there are NO PLANTS and NO PUDDLES... it's a huge dry lakebed.

If you have no fucking SENSE, and no money either, you'd probably HATE Burning Man, but you can have a GREAT time there using either sense OR money. I realize that not everybody here is a backpacker, but you don't have to be one to rent an RV. You DO have to be one to NOT rent an RV.

My whole budget for BM will be: $210 round trip from Cleveland to SF $140 event fee for the week (I bought mine early, they're $200 now) $520 for the RV (shared with Wei, Philo, Puzzling Evidence -- $1700 total)). Probably $300 for food, water, coffee, gas, videotape, stuff like that.

Sheets and bedding and cookware come with the RV. (which has a stove and microwave, toilet, shower, 3 double beds.)

So I'll be TOTALLY IN DEBT through Xmas... so what else is new?

Buying or selling of anything is frowned upon. In fact you're even supposed to cover or customize logos like "U-HAUL" on your rented truck. I brought Dobb shirts and traded a couple for some very good psuedo-frappy the very first day. The one thing that can be bought is coffee, by the cup from the BM Org in the center tent-mall.

Last year I felt weird being a "tourist" because most people seemed to be contributing SOMETHING, even if it was just looking funny in their goofy outfit. So I took to carrying the Full Metal Dobbshead and doing shadow tricks with it when the opportunity presented itself. (Pretty lame except at the Shadow Theater.) This year, Philo and I are having a SubGenius Badfilm Drive-In much like Dr. Dark had at 4X-Day -- Philo can get a FANCY video projector from work and we both have world clas badfilm and bulldada collections. If we have a couple of benches and popcorn and lemonade, and a screen, that'll be good enough -- and we won't have to man it all the time, we can wander away and let it run itself for a movie at a time.

What you mainly do at BM is wander around looking at stuff. The girl watching (or whatnot) is GREAT because it's such a YOUTHFUL crowd, at least compared to what I'm used to at things like Starwood. I'm like a grandpa at Burning Man. Philo's like Methuselah. He's almost 50.

It is the WHITEST bunch of colored people I ever saw. The color is all body paint. It's like being in England.

The art cars and the constructions, the nutty theme camps, the costumes, all that makes it rather unlike any other shin-dig I can think of EXCEPT X-Day! It's just that X-Day is 150 people, BM is 15,000. We have one art-catapult, they have 100, and several mobile art-DRAGONS to boot. And so on. We have two or three nice "theme lounges" with free booze, they have hundreds. And so on.

They started exactly like X-Day did, with 50 friends and one burning thing, only they started back in the 80s... well, so did we, but they did it in the BAY AREA, not the backwoods of Arkansas. So theirs grew. We didn't do it AGAIN until 1996. Ours is now SHRINKING.

If we ever do see X-Day Drills as big as Burning Man, it would probably be a good idea if one of us had paid attention to what THEY had done right and wrong, now wouldn't it? I am happy to be that one. I have also closely watched how Starwood is run, from inside. It's profitable but appeals to a completely different clientele than we do. Even though Starwood is fringe religion and BM is fringe art, we're more like BM. And BM is also more cult-like than Starwood is, believe it or not.

What I can't understand is why the Con didn't start using BM in ads a LONG LONG TIME AGO -- it's very possible that they didn't because BM wouldn't LET them.

You'd have to experience BM's media center to know what I mean. They make it VERY difficult for the big media reporters, but are real chummy with the independents. You aren't giving BM nearly enough credit. People calling Burning Man "commercial" comes from their own imagination of what THEY would do with it if they suddenly found a multimillion-dollar art/disaster on their hands, not the way BM really is. From what I've seen of the way the Burning Man Org is run, it's a relatively workable, democratic, and amazingly NON-commercialized thing.

So far! I didn't meet Larry Harvey yet, but I probably will this time. I'll tell him for you, "Hey Larry, man -- don't sell out, ok?"

If we could be as big as BM that would be GREAT! But it would partly be THANKS to Burning Man and the lessons learned, and ground paved, that such a thing would even happen.

It's a good thing SOMEBODY around here isn't totally closed-minded and knee-jerk conservative when it comes to our cultish rivals and competition, or we'd be even further behind than we are now. AHEM!!

Modemac, my entire life has been a long series of stupid moves that somehow at least break even and often make profit. (Getting really drunk and starting a business is the best example).

I don't understand it, but now that Joy and I have joined our slackfields it seems that no matter what we do we always seem to land on top.

Ahem, indeed. You know very well that those of us who can't afford to go to Burning Man will instead sit behind our keyboards and whine about how lame it is. After all, that's what most SubGenii do when it comes to X-Day - only a few of us go there, and the rest whine about it.

But rather than say that X-Day is shrinking (even though we've had the same number of people for the last three years, and everyone agrees that this year was a TRIUMPH) and run off to Burning Man instead, I'm still more interested in putting some effort into making X-Day the festival it DESERVES to be. Maybe THEN those goddamn saucers will show up!

Worse--Modemac will trick some poor sucker into putting effort into X-Day FOR him. Should be a hoot to watch.

On the other hand, I'd be more than happy to rent a honking big Winnie and drive Vancouver and Seattle subs to BM, as long as I knew the clan was gathering. (I tire of pagans - we got too many here as it is)

We Seattle SubGenii are discussing renting an RV for X-Day. You should check with us in January or February to see how that's panning out.

Incidently, is it possible to land a plane down there? I mean big - like a DC-3? Talk about an entrance! The plane! The plane!

If you ignore a few pesky tents scattered across the "runway" and don't mind a few trees here and there, sure.

i was thinking more like:

hey, let's set the plane on fire.

type of a thing.

but i guess your way works, too.

We did indeed think about that. Couldn't decide between calling it "Warm Boy" or "Naked Woman".

How about Scorched Earth?

Incidently, is it possible to land a plane down there? I mean big - like a DC-3? Talk about an entrance! The plane! The plane!
I dunno HOW big, but there's an airfield within eyeshot of the fest, and we saw stunt pilots doing tricks overhead and then landing over there several times.

Too far! I want to roll right up with both engines full throttle and blow everyone's tent away!

What sort of turn-out are you expecting? I might be able to make it, but it's very tentative. I'm looking at changing jobs in the near future so there could well be a conflict.

I will. let's get the biggest unit money can buy - Tammy Wynette's tour
bus even! I have a commercial licence if you need a driver.

sigh... the only aircraft in the Dobbs Aviation fleet worth saving and you
want to TORCH IT! What's gotten into you kevbob? Burn Stang's Concord if
you must, but that 3 is the only way into (or out of) Dobbstown Malaysia.
Try landing a Boeing on a bamboo runway bub. I guarantee... you'll only do
it once.

Okay, where are yougoing to FIT an RV?

it'd prolly fit in the pool.
